Other Registration Status News:
Now that the Dogue de Bordeaux has attained full 100% AKC recognition and is moved into the Working Group, all dogs in the FSS database that have three generation pedigrees from approved registrieswill automatically be issued an AKC registration number and certificate (dogs under 10 years of age only). Those Dogue de Bordeaux that do not have thee generations of approved registries (i.e. pedigrees including any FIC dogs) will remain in the FSS database indefinitely or until (if ever) a three generation pedigree of acceptable registries entirely, is achieved. These dogs with the FSS numbers only may enter and compete in regular AKC companion events only. They are not eligible to compete in any AKC conformation events and any offspring produced by these dogs, will be ineligible for registration with the AKC and offered the same competitions, companion events only. The DDBS and AKC representatives will be available to answer your questions and concerns, as well as facilitate any problems that may arise.
February 2008:
From the February 2008 Board Meeting:
FSS Enrollment for Fully Registered Breeds
The Board discussed an AKC Staff proposal, which would allow dogs that do not have a complete three-generation pedigree at the time the breed becomes AKC registrable, to continue to be eligible breeding stock by being recorded in the AKC Foundation Stock Service.
Following a motion by Mr. Merriam, seconded by Mr. Gladstone, it was VOTED (unanimously) to permit dogs lacking complete three-generation pedigrees to continue to be recorded in the AKC Foundation Stock Service at the time the breed is approved for regular status. These dogs will be eligible to be used as breeding stock during the Open Registration dates set at the time the breed is approved for regular status. The progeny of these dogs with complete three-generation pedigrees will be converted to AKC registration.
October 2007:
From the October 2007 Board Meeting:
The Dogue de Bordeaux will be eligible for AKC registration and for competition in the Working Group, effective July 1, 2008. There will be an open registry for the breed until August 31, 2012.
October 9, 2007:
As of July 2008 the Dogue de Bordeaux will be an official Working Group breed within the AKC. Congratulations to everyone for all their hard work in completing this task! It has taken us 10 years, but it was well worth the wait!
October 9, 2007
Dear Mr. Brown,
It is my great pleasure to inform you that at the October 2007 Board meeting, the AKC Board of Directors approved the Dogue de Bordeaux to be eligible to compete in the Working Group effective July 1, 2008.
Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any further questions. I look forward to working with you as the breed becomes eligible to compete in Conformation Events.
Sincerely, Mari-Beth O’Neill / cc: Darrell Hayes, Peter Gaeta
October 1, 2007:
Thank you to all who voted on the changes to the AKC Standard. Returns are as follows:
141 Ballots returned / 134 - Yes / 7 - No
The AKC has been notified and they have voted on our acceptance to the Working Group in October (see story on page 1).
August,
2007:
Ballots go out to
all members explaining the minor changes requested by the AKC. Ballots are due
by September 24, 2007 to be counted.
July 2007:
DDBSA Petitions AKC for full status:
At the July 2007 AKC BOD meeting, the DDBSA petition for full working group status was reviewed and denied. Please see the following excerpt from their meeting minutes as to why:
“Dogue de Bordeaux:The Board reviewed a petition from the Dogue de Bordeaux Society of America seeking full AKC registration; acceptance into the AKC Stud Book and eligibility to compete in the Working Group. The Board did have a number of reservations with some of the wording in the breed standard and Staff will be contacting the club concerning that.”
The DDBSA board has reviewed the recommendations and made some necessary revisions to the proposed breed standard. A copy of the reformatted standard will be mailed to each current DDBSA member, along with a ballot for you to either approve or deny the changes.
For general information, the reason these changes were brought to our attention at this time is because the members of the AKC Board are not the same people that are employed by the AKC in the standards and breeds departments who originally approved our current breed standard. The changes that the AKC is asking for do not affect the description of the breed characteristics in any way. There are three items that are addressed.
Two faults are removed because they apply to all breeds and do not need to be specifically listed. Any reference to another breed, has been changed to another adjective (again something that is being applied to all breed standards).
And lastly, some of the DQ faults are being modified to Severe Faults based on the fact that they can be subjective. The reasoning behind this is that if a dog is disqualified three times it can never be shown again and there is no appeals process to undo this decision with the AKC conformation system. It would be a shame to loose a dog’s show career because of this, especially if it were a matter of the judge not fully understanding our breed.
All of the proposed changes will be highlighted in the copy you will be receiving in the mail. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask prior to sending back your ballot. These ballots are very important and we ask that all members participate in this vote.
Once the ballots are back, and pending the results our petition for full working group status will be reviewed again at the October 2007 AKC BOD meeting. Our proposed entrance into the working group is still set for July 2008.
March 5,
2007:
AKC January Board
Meeting Minutes:
Dogue de Bordeaux Obedience Jump Height Requirement:
Following a motion by Dr. Battaglia, seconded by Ms.
Scully, it was VOTED (unanimously; absent Dr. Haines) to amend the Obedience
Regulations, Chapter 4, Section 11 to add the Dogue
de Bordeaux to the list of breeds approved to compete at a jump height that is
three-quarters of its height at the withers. The new ¾ jump height will still
follow current regulations with jumps being set at the nearest 2 inches. The
change is effective July 1, 2007.

Authorities acknowledge that throughout the world there are several hundred
distinct breeds of purebred dogs, not all of which are AKC recognized breeds.
Those officially recognized for AKC registration appear in the Stud Book of the
American Kennel Club. The AKC provides for a regular path of development for a
new breed, which may result in that breed's full recognition and appearance in
the official Stud Book as an AKC recognized breed.
Briefly stated, the requirement for admission to the Stud Book is clear and
categorical proof that a substantial, sustained nationwide interest and activity
in the breed exists. This includes an active parent club, with serious and
expanding breeding activity over a wide geographic area.
When in the judgment of the Board of Directors such interest and activity
exists, a breed is admitted to the Miscellaneous Class. Breeds in the
Miscellaneous Class may compete and earn titles in AKC Obedience, Tracking and
Agility events. Miscellaneous breeds are also eligible to compete in Junior
Showmanship. They may also compete at conformation shows, but here are limited
to competition in the Miscellaneous Class and are not eligible for championship
points.
When the Board of Directors is satisfied that a breed is continuing a healthy,
dynamic growth in the Miscellaneous Class, it may be admitted to registration in
the Stud Book and the opportunity to compete in regular classes.

event that the owner of a dog designated Best of Breed shall not exhibit the dog
in the Best of Miscellaneous Class Competition, no other dog of the same breed
shall be allowed to compete. There shall be no further competition for dogs

From DDBS President, George Brown:
I am very
pleased to announce that our Membership has overwhelmingly voted to accept the
proposed Breed Standard, amended Bylaws, and Constitution of the DDBS. This was
the last step to finalize our petition for the AKC Miscellaneous Class. The
results were as follows:
Current

For our
petition to be accepted into the Miscellaneous Class, it must first be presented
at the November AKC Board of Directors meeting. They will then vote Yes or No at
their December Board of Directors meeting. It has to be a two month process for
their meetings. First month to present, second month to
vote. Our anticipated date of official Miscellaneous Class status would
be July 2006.
At the SADB
National this year, AKC Committee person, Cindy McElderry
reported the good news to SADB President, Sylviane
Tompousky and Raymond Triquet.
Raymond announced our news at their Annual Meeting and Dinner that night where
everyone applauded and was excited for the Dogue de
Bordeaux Society and our beloved Dogue de Bordeaux
breed in the United States.
I'd like to
personally thank each and every one of you who worked so hard on the preparation
of our petition, those who spoke out in the form of their vote and the diligence
that has gotten our breed to this point in history. The results of this vote
speak loud and clearly in regard to the dedication of our members to see our
breed recognized as one with the rest of the world. This has been long overdue.
I encourage you all to continue to strive for the love of our breed in every
capacity of this beautiful dog that we love so much.
The FCI standard has been formatted into AKC format and has been approved by the
AKC, SADB and the DDBS Board of Directors. The Board of Directors is also
working with the AKC at this time on revising the DDBS By
Laws.

The AKC FSS
registration department has begun inputting the DDBS Database. If you submitted
pedigrees from the UKC, FCI, FIC or USBC when the DDBS was collecting them, you
should be receiving AKC FSS registration forms shortly. If you are not sure if
your dog was entered into the DDBS Database, you can email
DDBSociety@aol.com with your dogs name to inquire (phone calls will not be
accepted for these inquires at this time).
However there is a small
situation, between the time the DDBS collected pedigrees and the time the
database was entered, some dogs had already been issued FSS numbers when their
owners registered the dogs on their own. The system was supposed to catch these
“duplicates” and not enter them again, but some dogs were missed and were
reissued new FSS numbers by putting a “II” at the end
of their name
If you have received such a
registration form (i.e. your dog was previously registered AKC FSS by you and
already has a number, and your new registration form has “II” at the end of your
dogs name and a new FSS number), or if you have any other corrections or errors,
please submit a copy of the registration and an explanation of the
error/correction to be made to Jennifer Roberts at 60903
Valmont Dr,. Boulder, CO 80301 and she will work with the AKC on correcting the
duplication. Please do not contact AKC directly as it will be more streamline
and time efficient to have them submitted by Jennifer.
The DDBS is very
proud to be chosen by the AKC FSS as the breed club that they will be
recommending to the AKC to be the parent club for the Dogue
de Bordeaux in AKC! This is great news for the breed and the organization. The
DDBS and all its members and Board have been working very hard for this goal for
many years.
Once the events committee and BOD of the AKC give their final vote, it will be
finalized. The breed will be presented to be accepted to the
Miscellaneous class by the end of the 2004 and will hopefully be accepted
into the Miscellaneous class in 2005.
Please review the following message about registration carefully. If you have
questions, please contact Jennifer at
Doguestar98@msn.com
Good job everyone and congratulations!
The DDBS
advises all USA Dogue de Bordeaux owners to use the
AKC FSS as their primary registration body for domestic born
Dogues de Bordeaux in the move forward with AKC
recognition.
Registration Status:
The AKC Foundation
Stock Service (FSS) currently accepts the following registries for the
Dogue de Bordeaux:
1) UKC (United Kennel Club)
2) USBC (United States Bordeaux Corp)
3) FCI - from the acceptable country list (see link) and must be an EXPORT
pedigree from the dogs country of birth and in the new owners name.
http://www.akc.org/rules/special_registry_services.cfm?page=5
The FSS does NOT accept the FIC (Federation of International Canines) as the
primary registry for any dog or a dog within ones three generation pedigree.
When the Dogue de Bordeaux is admitted into the
Misc. class, the above will still apply. Any dog that is issued an FSS number
will be able to compete in Misc. class conformation events as well as companion
events (obedience, agility, etc).
Once the Dogue de Bordeaux has attained full 100%
AKC recognition and is moved into the Working Group, all dogs in the FSS
database that have three generation pedigrees from approved registries (see
acceptable registry list previously noted) will automatically be issued an AKC
registration number and certificate.
** The FSS has approved the FCPR (Puerto Rico) as an acceptable registry only if
listed within the three generation pedigree. Please note,
they do not accept FCPR for the individual dog, as the primary registration, the
dog must still be registered with one of the aforementioned acceptable
registries – however they will accept it within that dogs three generation
pedigree.
When the Dogue de Bordeaux is accepted for full AKC
recognition, those Dogue de Bordeaux that do not
have thee generations of approved registries (i.e. pedigrees including any FIC
dogs) will remain in the FSS database indefinitely or until (if ever) a three
generation pedigree of acceptable registries entirely, is achieved.
These dogs with the FSS numbers only may enter and compete in regular AKC
companion events only. They are not eligible to compete in any AKC conformation
events and any offspring produced by these dogs, will be ineligible for
registration with the AKC and offered the same competitions, companion events
only.
During the period that the Dogue de Bordeaux is in
the Misc. class, it is imperative that all Dogue de
Bordeaux in the US are registered directly with the
FSS (if they are not already). Up until the time we are 100% AKC, they will
accept the FCI, UKC and USBC papers on your dog for FSS registration. BUT when
we do gain full recognition – these registries will no longer be accepted and
only those foreign registries from the aforementioned link will apply. Any
registration dilemmas may be addressed and possibly corrected up until the date
of full AKC acceptance. There will be a page on the DDBS website outlining and
citing examples of acceptable and unacceptable pedigrees. There is no definitive
date for full AKC recognition once we are in the miscellaneous
class, typically a breed can anticipate at least a
year and no more than three with the misc. class.
The DDBS and AKC representatives will be available to answer your questions and
concerns, as well as facilitate any problems that may arise.
The above information has been verified and approved by the AKC FSS coordinator
Patricia Lejman. Questions can be directed to
Jennifer Roberts at
doguestar98@msn.com, or 303-442-1541 (Mountain Time).
The AKCFSS has
officially chosen to recommend the DDBS as the Parent Club for the
Dogue de Bordeaux going forward with recognition. We
anticipate being accepted into the Miscellaneous
class within months and the Dogue de Bordeaux will
be competing in this class in 2005.
The DDBS
advises all USA Dogue de Bordeaux owners to use the
AKC FSS as their primary registration body for domestic born
Dogues de Bordeaux in the move forward with AKC
recognition.
At the 2004 National
Show, Cindy McElderry once again made a report on
the progress of the Dogue de Bordeaux and the AKC.
The AKC is ready to move forward and anticpate the
Dogue de Bordeaux being accepted into the
miscellaneous class by the end of the year. The recent untimely death of our
contact at the AKC FSS, pushed back scheduled meetings, but the new person in
charge is tending to business and a new meeting will be scheduled.
July 4, 2003:
At the national
show, Cindy McElderry informed the BOD that our
database has been turned over to the AKC and they are working diligently in
getting it into their new program. The DDBS database is the first database the
AKC is inputting into their new program. The AKC committee and the AKC-FSS are
still working closely together to make this a reality. We will post when the
task is complete and the next steps to be taken.
At this time the
database is closed and our goal is having it approved. The club and AKC have
been working together over the summer and fall, and we continue into the winter
months. The DDBS is no longer accepting pedigrees for the database. The DDBS
STRONGLY suggests that all new litters and dogs be
registered/listed with the AKC FSS only at this time. The DDBS will
continue to update you on the progress on this page as it is received.
Please make sure to review the following pages:
So Many Registries What Do They Mean? and
The Road to AKC for more information
How else can you help? Be an active member of the DDBS. Let everyone know you
are a DDBS member at shows; help to educate judges, and be sure to bring the
AKC judges form to shows where you are showing and ask judges to fill out
the forms for you. Send the completed form into the address listed, these will
then be sent to our AKC represenative. Be active in
rescue, conformation, working events, pet events, ask
for a supported entry at shows near you. There are many ways we can all work
together to obtain the goal of AKC recognition for our breed.
Do You Have Questions
About the AKC/FSS and the Dogue
de Bordeaux?
Of course you do,
and for that reason the DDBS has an AKC Committee - put in place in 1997 - to
work closely with representatives from the AKC on the future of the breed within
AKC and the Foundation Stock Service. Cindy and Jennifer work with the AKC and
the DDBS Board of Directors everyday as liaisons between the club and the AKC.
The DDBS AKC Committee is always available to answer your questions in a clear,
concise, and upfront honest way about the ongoing developments of the breed
between the DDBS and AKC. Please contact Val Barr at
Val911K9@aol.com with any questions!
